Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic will square off in what is set to be a very interesting quarterfinal clash at Roland Garros.
Stan Wawrinka is in excellent form right now, riding an 8 match winning streak, composed of his victory in Geneva and his 4 wins here in Paris. This week Stan has not lost a set, defeating Kovalik, Dolgopolov, Fognini and Monfils to get to this stage. He had a couple ups and downs in certain matches, but played very well overall and we know chances are he is only going to get better once he reaches this stage of a Grand Slam.
Marin Cilic has been flawless this week in Paris. Not only has the Croat won all his matches in straight (Gulbis, Kravchuk, F.Lopez, Anderson), but he hasn`t lost more than 3 games in a set so far! That`s an amazing statistic, even though he only had to play 10 sets (Anderson retired). Cilic has been painting the lines and hitting bombs all over the place, but now he will face a totally different level of opposition in Stan Wawrinka.

The surface is also an advantage for Stan, as he`s better than Cilic on clay and in the past he lost only 1 set in the 5 meetings on red dirt.
While Wawrinka clearly has a style which frustrates Cilic, this is not exactly one of those one sided matchups which are impossible for one player to overcome. The 11-2 H2H score is a little bit misleading. Many of the matches were very close, and Cilic won plenty of sets. Wawrinka won the last two matches 2-0 (both in 2016), but the scores were 7-6 7-6 and 6-4 7-6. That`s generally how their meetings went, so Cilic proved can put up a solid fight against Stan.
Wawrinka seems like he might be in “Stanimal” mode in this tournament, which would make him a real challenger for the title. He didn`t necessarily play flawless this week, but he did not lose a set and had many moments of brilliance. He seems ready to explode, as he usually does when he reaches this stage of a Grand Slam.
On the other hand, Cilic is also playing lights out. He has been phenomenal this week, playing at his best level. Even if Wawrinka explodes for a brilliant performance, Cilic’s form should allow him to take at least a set here.
Both player are at the top of their game this week and both have solid serves, which can prolong sets to tiebreaks. The H2H matchup advantage (especially on clay) will probably get Wawrinka over the line, but it`s not like he blew Cilic off the court in previous meetings. The last time Wawrinka beat him clearly was 6 matches ago, back in 2012.
Cilic has played the better tennis this week and despite the H2H, I think he will take at least a set here. The games line stays at 39 and a 4 set match should make a bet on the over a winner. My tip is over 39 games to be played. Prediction: Stan Wawrinka – Marin Cilic 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-2.
