Wawrinka – Gasquet

Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet square off in what seems to be the most evenly matched Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Grass might not be Stan’s best surface, but the Swiss is surely accomplished on it and doing a good job lately on the green – reaching the quarterfinals for a second year in a row, without losing a single set. Wawrinka seems to have taken his French Open form into Wimbledon and is playing some great tennis right now. He`s on the back of a solid win over David Goffin, he did have some problems against the Belgian but victory was always looking likely for Stan.

Richard Gasquet was looking shar as ever during the previous round, on the back of three 3-0 wins and leading Nick Kyrgios 2-0. However, at that point, Richard started to get exposed. I`m not sure it if was mentally or just for tennis reasons (or both), but Gasquet lowered his level and was going in a really bad direction. The Frenchman was very lucky that Kyrgios suddently collapsed at the end of the 4th set tiebreak – the Australian had 6-4 and the serve, but lost 4 points in a row with 2 double faults and 2 missed second serve returns, gifting the win to Richard.

The Head 2 Head is 1-1, with Wawrinka winning the last meeting in 2013. The pair never met on grass. They are very similar in terms of playing style and are accomplished on grass, so neither can claim a matchup advantage in this one.

Wawrinka is the better player, he`s in excellent long term form and is full of confidence. Gasquet played good tennis himself this week, but hasn`t met an in form opponent and got exposed when Kyrgios started to play a little better in the 4th round. It was really beginning to look like Gasquet will lose that one and his reaction in the end was telling – he knew that he got away with it.

I expect Stan to continue playing solid tennis and edge this one in no more than 5 sets. The odds for a straight win (which are dropping) are just good enough to warrant a solid 8 unit bet. My tip is Wawrinka to win, a simple choice, but one that I expect to prove profitable in the end. Prediction: Stan Wawrinka – Richard Gasquet 7-6 6-2 3-6 6-3.
