Wawrinka – Querrey

Stan Wawrinka Sam Querrey betting previewThe third round of London’s Aegon Championships will see Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka take on big serving american Sam Querrey.

Wawrinka had an amazing season so far with his wins in Melbourne and Monte Carlo, proving he belongs between the world`s elite and clearly improving his level of tennis. Still, the swiss has not worked out his problems with consistency. Aside from AO, Monte Carlo and Chennai, he lost early in most of the tournaments. In the last three competitions he only defeated Pere Riba, losing to Thiem, Haas and Garcia Lopez. On top of that, Wawinka will now have to face playing on grass, a surface he never liked. Stan has a 14-18 win-loss record on the green and was an absolute non-factor on the surface until he reached last year’s final at Hertogenbosch’ – he did not meet any quality players though, lost easily to Mahut and went on to get dismantled by Hewitt in Wimbledon. Here in London, Wawrinka had  a bye in the first round and then benefited from Baghdatis’ retirement after just 5 games.

Sam Querrey did not have the best year so far, posting a 10-12 win-loss record and posting almost zero remarkable results (a semifinal in Houston is his highlight). Nevertheless, the American is a quality player and he must feel confident of his chances on grass – he loves the surface and already improved his game here in London, winning against Chardy (3 sets) and Kudla (2 sets). Sam has a great win-loss record on this surface and has always produced the goods on the green – he’s actually a former winner at the Aegon Championships in 2010.

Wawrinka leads the H2H 3-1, all matches being played on hard, but Querrey won the last meeting late last year in Beijing. One can’t say either player holds a match-up advantage over the other, but Querrey clearly has the surface advantage today.

The swiss is the better player and had a much better year, there`s little doubt about that, but there are 3 key factors favoring Querrey here: he`s much better suited than Stan on grass, he`s a good player and playing well this week and Wawrinka had zero time to adapt to a playing surface he hates (played just 5 games this week). If we add the inconsistency on Wawrinka and the odds on Querrey, a bet on the american seems like the logical option here. My tip is Querrey to win. Prediction: Stan Wawrinka – Sam Querrey 3-6 4-6.
