Simona Halep will try to advance to her first ever Grand Slam semifinal, but she will have to deliver the goods against the seasoned and versatile Svetlana Kuznetsova, a former Roland Garros winner who looks to be regaining here old form.
Halep (4 WTA) is the top remaining seed in the tournament after the early exits of Serena Williams, Na Li and Agnieszka Radwanska. The Romanian had an amazing breakout season last year and she continued the same form in 2014, the highlights of the year being the Doha title, the Madrid final and the Australian Open quarters. Halep has been dominant so far in the Roland Garros, she did not lose a set and wasn`t even in danger of doing so. Nevertheless, the opposition was not really top class. Simona won 6-4 6-3 against Sloane Stephens last round but her level of tennis was not impressive against an out of form player which does not fancy playing on clay. Halep s alternating good spells of play with periods of poor performance, which is a worrying fact for her.

Kuznetsova had to overcome much tougher competition in order to reach the Roland Garros quarters, defeating the likes of Giorgi, Kvitova (9-7 in the 3rd set) and Safarova. The russian player is starting to look like her old self, despite still being a little bit off the level she used to be. Her shotmaking remains a delight and on her day she can surely defeat anybody. She`ll need consistent tennis to get past Halep though.
The H2H is 2-2, with Kuznetsova winning the last meeting on clay just a couple of weeks ago in Stuttgart (7-5 7-6). The two players are both very good on clay and have somewhat similar styles, Kuznetsova is a little bit more versatile while Halep is a little bit more consistent.
Halep has the ranking and the long term form speaking for her, but Kuznetsova has so much more experience in Grand Slams and she is playing very well herself right now. There are still question marks over Halep’s ability to perform on the big stage and if this is the case, she will have big problems against such a savvy opponent like Kuznetsova. Svetlana proved she can beat the Romanian in that recent victory at Stuttgart and if Halep does not play better than she did against Stephens she has every chance of losing this one. The odds for a Kuznetsova win are way too high so I will tip the Russian here and this pick surely must represent a value bet. Prediction: Svetlana Kuznetsova – Simona Halep 6-2 1-6 7-5.

you were right, the score was even more one sided but Halep was a little lucky to win so big. I think the bet was worth it but maybe 4-5 units would have been a wiser investment.
