Switzerland – Costa Rica

Switzerland Costa Rica World Cup prediction

Switzerland will attempt to finish off the job and qualify to the World Cup KO stage, after claiming a massive 2-1 win over Serbia in the previous round of Group E. Meanwhile, Costa Rica has only pride left to play for.

Switzerland has been rock solid so far in the tournament, as it was expected from a side which lost just one of the last 24 matches played (!!). The Swiss side started of with a 1-1 draw against Brazil and went on to score a late winner against Serbia for a huge win in the previous round. Switzerland might have been a bit lucky with these results, but nevertheless the side played well, and the Swiss now only need a draw to qualify.

The Costaricans were unable to repeat the heroics from the previous World Cup, when they almost reached the semifinals, but that`s not to say they played badly. Costa Rica lost narrowly 0-1 to Serbia in the first match, while almost claiming a draw against Brazil in their next outing – with the Brazilians netting twice in injury time for a 2-0 victory. The Central Americans defended well, but offense has been a problem for them so far in this World Cup.

Team news & lineups:

Both teams are reported to be at full strength, as Shaqiri, Lichtsteiner and Xhaka have avoided bans for their controversial celebration against Serbia.

Switzerland: Sommer – Lichtsteiner, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez – Behrami, Xhaka – Zuber, Dzemaili, Shaqiri – Gavranovic

Costa Rica: Navas – Acosta, Gonzalez, Duarte – Gamboa, Borges, Guzman, Calvo – Ruiz, Venegas – Urena

Switzerland is rated as low as 1.60 to win this match, but it could be trickier than expected for them. Not only is Costa Rica a good side which proved its worth including in this World Cup, but Switzerland only needs a draw to qualify.

Obviously the Swiss would love a big win which could secure them the first place in the group, but a much more realistic approach for them will be playing it safe. Switzerland will be careful not to take silly risks and will first and foremost try to stay safe at the back. That should be an achievable objective, as Switzerland’s defense is extremely solid, while Costa Rica hasn`t played well at all in attack in this tournament.

Both teams rely on defense as their main weapon, Switzerland will not take many risks as they will qualify with a draw, and Costa Rica would also be happy claiming a point in this World Cup. In these circumstances, it makes sense to expect a low scoring game. The odds are also pretty good on the under due to Switzerland being a heavy favorite.

Look for Costa Rica to try and close down the area in front of their goal, while Switzerland won`t be too desperate to break them down. My tip here will be under 2,5 goals to be scored. Prediction: Switzerland – Costa Rica 0-0.

  1. Come on mate, 6 wins over 18 World Cup picks isn’t good enough for a legitimate caller. I know you are better than this. The unders have been volatile!

    • *capper

    • Unfortunately I have been really bad on this World Cup. You are right about the volatility, I feel most of the unders I lost should have won, teams were just very effective in front of goal. But that`s not acceptable at odds 1.60 – 1.70.

To be perfectly honest football is not my sport (missed some big winners on rugby / tennis in the last couple of weeks). But I am following this World Cup, and I think that it`s very important when betting, to follow the games. I have confidence I`ll judge most of the KO round matches correctly, so I`ll ride with the World Cup until its end and do my best to get back on track.

    • I agree that many teams have been surprisingly effective at finishing. But don’t forget about the 8 own goals and how the VAR system is creating goals (mostly PK’s) that would not have happened without the new rules. However, the scoring will subside a bit during KO stage, but will the books account for that? Probably. Just keep capping what you feel, I know you will go on a run very soon. Good luck!

    • I completely agree with this comment

  2. Teams playing for “pride” in match day 3 have been dangerous against teams trying to qualify… Morocco, Peru, South Korea, Costa Rica have all avoided defeat..
Poland seems worth a look at evens on the draw no bet vs Japan who has a win ca 20 man Colombia and a draw against Senegal

    • Typo… vs 10 man Colombia
It’d have been super impressive had they beat 20 man Colombia!

    • Poland looked really bad to me in the first two games … not just that they played poorly, but something really seemed to be wrong … tactically or in terms of morale, there`s something which seems to be wrong in the team, so I wasn`t comfortable in backing them here. Good luck if you did back them.
