Berdych – Tomic

Tomas Berdych will play his first grass court match of the season in the second round at the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart, against Bernard Tomic.

Berdych hasn`t had a great season so far, dropping out of the Top 10, but that`s not to say he hasn`t played well. Tomas put together a decent 23-15 win-loss record and has been pretty good on clay, getting a couple of solid wins against guys like Simon or Raonic. Berdych is on the back of a second round loss in Roland Garros against the up and coming Khakhanov.

Bernard Tomic has been absolutely dreadful in 2017, barely winning a few matches and often looking disinterested in tennis. He got his first win in the last 5 matches here in the Stuttgart first round, but it was far from impressive. Tomic needed 3 sets to defeat Robert, a player who is useless on grass and who is in horrible form as well.

Berdych leads the H2H 4-0 (2-0 on grass), all matches taking place between 2013 and 2015. Both players like grass courts, so the surface shouldn`t impact the result in any way.

Berdych might not be the same player he was a few years ago, but he is still a legitimate Top 20 player, still capable of producing Top 10 level tennis. He has been in decent form recently and will surely look at the grass court season as the perfect chance to return between the elite.

Looking at Tomic’s form, it`s hard to see him beating any Top 100 player, let alone a guy like Berdych. The Australian has lost 70% of his matches this season and hasn`t proved anything of note in the first round here in Stuttgart. Despite this being the first match on grass for Berdych, while Tomic has one under his belt, I expect a solid win for Tomas. He knows the green surface all to well, so he shouldn`t need any time to adjust – especially as he had time to train after his early exit at Roland Garros.

Berdych shouldn`t need more than a good, solid serving display to win this match rather comfortably. The game handicap line stands at -3, which seems low, particularly considering the fact that Berdych won all his 4 meetings with Tomic by more than 3 games.
