Haas – Zverev

Tommy Haas Mischa Zverev betting preview

All – German quarterfinal on offer in Stuttgart, as Tommy Haas tries to back up his marvelous win over Federer against serve & volley expert Mischa Zverev.

The 39 year old Haas was not expected to do much damage in Stuttgart, given his poor form this season and his age. He didn`t play very well in the first round against Herbert, it was a poor match which Herbert was on the brink of winning in the 3rd set, but Haas came up with a few moments of brilliance to steal the decider and win the match. Next up was Federer in the second round and Haas pulled off a miraculous win, especially as he was 2-6 0-2 down. It was an incredible performance for the veteran and he must now be considered a legit threat in this tournament.

Mischa Zverev benefited from the luck of the draw and cruised through the first two rounds, easily beating Jaziri and Hanfmann. The German is going trough the best times of his career, recently breaking into the Top 30, and he will have high expectations from the grass court season. This is his best surface, so Mischa will look to take advantage of his good form and move even higher in the rankings, maybe win his first ATP tournament as well.

The H2H is 1-0 for Haas, the only meeting being played on grass, but it was 8 years ago and holds no relevance. Both players are very well suited for playing on the green, and at this stage of their careers graas is the best surface for them.

Haas had an amazing tournament so far and beating Federer at 39 years old was obviously a unique achievement. No matter the circumstances, Haas deserves massive respect for that, especially coming back from 2-6 0-2. Still, it has to be said that Federer was poor in the second part of the match. He was rusty and Haas also got lucky to win almost all important points – a few centimeters in a couple of shots and it would have been a routine 6-2 6-3 win for Roger.

Fact is that Haas was mediocre at best in the first round, and despite shocking Roger Federer in the 2nd, he didn`t play lights out tennis in that match either. Sure, he played well, he hit some big shots, but he wasn`t particularly consistent and benefited from Federer’s errors.

Haas will now face an in form Zverev who is a big threat on grass and who likes to serve and volley. Zverev will often take the game to Haas, who will need to hit passing shots consistently – and he hasn`t hit his shots steadily enough so far this week.

Finally, despite Haas being one of the fittest players on tour, there`s just so much your body can take at this age. After two long 3 setters, including a draining win over Federer (physically and mentally), Tommy might not have enough in the tank for yet another victory.

My tip is Zverev to win, he is not the kind of player to beat himself on this surface, and I don`t think Haas is good enough or fit enough at this point to take the win away from him. Prediction: Tommy Haas – Mischa Zverev 6-7 4-6.

  1. Hello! As far as I am concerned, the value is on Tommy. Misha is a good volley player, but , overall, his tennis is poor. Anyway, break a leg! 🙂
