Tri. & Tobago – Panama

Kenwyne Jones Trinidad Tobago Gold CupTrinidad & Tobago will meet Panama in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, with the match set to be played at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, USA.

Trinidad and Tobago has been one of the nicest surprises in the Gold Cup so far, winning their group with 7 points ahead of Mexico. They also played very entertaining football, scoring 9 goals in 3 matches – 3-1 against Guatemala, 2-0 against Cuba and a superb 4-4 with Mexico. The first place was a shock, but Trinidad & Tobago was always expected to qualify, as they have a pretty good squad with some guys playing in Europe, the most notable of course being Kenwyne Jones (Cardiff City).

Panama qualified to the quarterfinals as one of the best third placed teams despite not winning any games. Panama has 3 draws in 3 matches, all of them 1-1. The performance was rather disappointing, Panama was expected to win at least one of the games against Haiti and a decimated Honduras team, while their draw with USA in the last round was favored by the fact that the Americans had already won the group and fielded a weakened team.

Team news & lineups:

Both Trinidad & Tobago and Panama will likely use very similar lineups to the ones they fielded in the last group matchday, when each side got a great result.

Trinidad & Tobago: Phillip – David, Marshall, Bateau, Williams – J. Jones, Cato, George – Hyland, K. Jones, Cummings

Panama: Penedo – Davis, Cummings, Torres, Pimentel – Gomez, Godoy, Quintero, Cooper – Perez, Tejada

One could argue that Panama has better individual quality in their ranks and that is true, but Trinidad & Tobago has a good group of players as well and the difference is slim. But Trinidad & Tobago seems to be a better team overall in this tournament and they certainly played better football than Panama so far – a team that would have probably failed to qualify if they met a full strength and motivated USA team in the last group round.

All in all I am going with the team that showed better football and better tactics so far in the Gold Cup. Trinidad & Tobago is underrated today, so I`m tipping them with a +0,5 handicap – the odds are just good enough to go with this safer option. Trinidad & Tobago should at least get a tied result in regular time, but they are more than capable of even winning it in 90 minutes. Prediction: Trinidad & Tobago – Panama 1-1 (2-1 extra time).
