Uruguay had problems in the World Cup qualification stage but luckily for them they faced Jordan in the playoffs and of course they won easily. In the last months the South Americans focused better and are undefeated in 6 games (4 wins, 2 draws) and have two consecutive wins with clean sheets: vs. Northern Ireland and Slovenia. The problem for Uruguay is that Luis Suarez will probably miss the game. He is struggling with fitness and even if he would be fit, I doubt he would be forced against Costa Rica with such tough matches ahead. Even though Uruguay has amazing players and the Liverpool striker will be substituted by Diego Forlan, Suarez missing will be a big blow.

Costa Rica does not have squad issues and will field the best lineup, but it’s doubtful it will be enough to stop Uruguay. The Central Americans had a good qualifying campaign finishing second behind USA and have a good team, but nowhere near the quality of Uruguay. Also Costa Rica is not in the best form as of late: their last 6 matches saw 4 defeats, a win vs Paraguay and a draw vs Ireland in the last game – probably their best game in last few months, also playing with 10 men for more than a half. The big problem for Costa Rica is that their defense is very error prone and untrustworthy: Costa Rica allowed at least one goal in each of the last 10 matches.

I think Costa Rica will be up for this game and will give Uruguay some trouble. The Costa Ricans know how to counterrattack and have a great attacking duo of Campbell and Ruiz, so I think they will score. Uruguay on the other hand has so much quality up front even without Suarez. Cavani and Forlan will be eager to prove they can get the job done, and Uruguay will most likely score a couple of goals. The odds for Uruguay to win are short so my tip is over 2,5 goals – even if WC games are usually more low-scoring, this one looks like it will have goals, probably from both teams. Even if I’m wrong and Costa Rica won’t turn up, we can always realistically hope for Uruguay to score three and win us the bet. Correct score prediction: Uruguay – Costa Rica 2-1.
