Uruguay – Saudi Arabia

Uruguay Saudi Arabia World Cup prediction

Uruguay will take on Saudi Arabia in what appears to be, at least on paper, one of the most one sided matches in the World Cup so far.

Uruguay wasn`t particularly impressive in the first match against Egypt, where they won 1-0 via an injury time header. It seemed like they needed some time to get their wheels under them, especially as they only played one warm up game prior to the World Cup. Nevertheless, Uruguay played Ok and they were able to create a few big chances while also staying safe at the back. Cavani looked particularly sharp even if he didn`t get on the scoresheet.

Saudi Arabia was horrible in the World Cup opener, losing 0-5 to hosts Russia and looking very bad overall – even though Russia only got that big scoreline late in the game. The Ramadan (which ended exactly in the day of their World Cup opener) could have been a reason for the way Saudi Arabia played, and for the way they collapsed in the last 20 minutes or so. The team will definitely be eager to bounce back with a better performance and save some face, even though a result will be unlikely against Uruguay.

Uruguay World Cup squad

Saudi Arabia World Cup squad

Uruguay: Muslera – Varela, Gimenez, Godin, Caceres – Nandez, Vecino, Bentancur, De Arrascaeta – Suarez, Cavani

Saudi Arabia: Al-Mayouf – Al-Burayk, Om. Hawsawi, Os. Hawsawi, Al-Shahrani – Al-Shehri, Al-Faraj, Otayf, Al-Jassim, Al-Muwallad – Al-Sahlawi

Saudi Arabia should be better this time around, firstly due to the fact that they will be desperate to avoid another humiliation, and then to the Ramadan being over last Thursday. It`s unclear how much they respected that tradition, but you would expect that at least some players did and were affected.

However, that doesn`t mean Saudi Arabia will be able to avoid another big loss.

Uruguay is head and shoulders above today`s opponents and it was actually pretty remarkable how they dominated and created chances against Egypt despite not being at their best. Cavani and Suarez opened up space for themselves many times and could have banged in two goals each. Cavani was just unlucky, while Suarez had a horrible day completely misjudging two sitters. This scenario is unlikely to be repeated again.

Look for Saudi Arabia to try its best, but their defense is just not good enough to cope with Uruguay`s firepower. They can`t park the buss effectively, and that should hurt them.

My tip is Uruguay to cover the -2 asian handicap. Prediction: Uruguay – Saudi Arabia 3-0.
