Williams – Kvitova

Venus Williams Petra Kvitova betting preview

Venus Williams will attempt to reach her third Grand Slam semifinal of the year, as she takes on the resurgent Czech Petra Kvitova in the evening session on Artur Ashe.

Venus Williams had an amazing year, posting a 33-10 win-loss record and climbing back into the Top 10 at 37 years old. Most impressively, he reached two Grand Slam finals (Australian Open, Wimbledon), but lost both of them pretty clearly. Venus defeated Kuzmova, Dodin, Sakkari and Suarez Navarro in order to reach the quarterfinals here, so her draw was pretty straightforward – but she did lose two sets along the way (Kuzmova, Suarez Navarro).

Petra Kvitova was definitely not expected to do much at the US Open, as she didn`t play much tennis this year after being stabbed in the hand by a robber last December. She did win Birmingham a few months ago, but lost in the first or second round in her other tournaments. Nevertheless, Kvitova exploded over the last 10 days and has not dropped a set en route to the quarterfinals, making light work of Jankovic, Cornet, Garcia and most impressively Garbine Muguruza.

Kvitova leads the H2H 4-1 (3-1 on hard) and she seems to have a matchup advantage over Venus, but that may not be completely true considering that all matches were very close and needed a deciding set. Also, the last meeting was back in 2014.

Listen, Venus Williams is having a terrific season considering her age, but it looks like she has a limit she can not surpass anymore. Venus has not won a single tournament despite her consistency, and she was usually outplayed by in form top players when the going got tough in final stages of tournaments.

What`s more interesting is that Venus often seemed outpowered by big hitters, like it was the case recently in the Wimbledon final. Venus played her best tennis of the year in that tournament, but a big hitter like Muguruza absolutely demolished her in the final. Kvitova is a similar big hitter, and when you also consider her 4-1 lead in the H2H, this match starts to feel like it is hers to lose.

The Czech player has played truly remarkable tennis over the past 10 days and unless she has a dip in her level, there are not many arguments for Venus here.

Obviously there is a danger of that happening, considering the fact that Kvitova didn`t play much this year, and she was never the most consistent player – so the risk of her having a bad day exists. But she played consistently well here at the US Open, didn`t show sings of slowing down and seems to be in one of those “zones”, when her shots just kick clicking and clicking. And when she`s on such a run, she is hard to stop, as she has proved multiple times over the years.

My tip here is Kvitova to win, actually I wouldn`t be surprised if she ends up winning the whole thing. Look for her to outpower and outmuscle the veteran in this clash. Odds on this bet are currently dropping. Prediction: Venus Williams – Petra Kvitova 6-7 2-6.

    Never count anyone out.

    • You are right. But I didn`t mean to count her out. There has to be a winner and a loser, and I just thought this time she`ll be the loser.
