Viitorul – Gent

Viitorul Gent Europa League tips

Viitorul Constanta will try to salvage some pride in this Europa League qualifying second leg, after the Romanians lost 0-5 in Belgium against Gent.

The hosts paid the price for their lack of experience in Belgium, losing 0-5 in their first ever European match. The young Viitorul team did not play particularly poor, but their defense was ripped to shreds by a much better Gent side. The hosts followed that loss with another one, 1-3 in Liga 1 against Steaua, where again they were very vulnerable defensively.

Gent, who passed the Champions League group stage last season, is on the back of a 1-1 draw against Kortrijk in the first round of the Belgian league – a decent result on the road against a pretty good team. They have a huge game coming up against Gent on Sunday so they will definitely be more focused on that, with the manager expected to give some fringe players a chance in this reverse leg.

Team news: Purece, Ganea, Boli and Marin are questionable for the hosts, which is a problem because all of them are first team regulars. Purece and Marin will almost definitely not be in the starting lineup. Gent will probably rest some players, with the qualification being virtually decided, but the visitors are still expected to field a decent lineup.

The first leg was an entertaining affair and it was no surprise, as both teams like to play attacking football. Gent obviously had tons of chances and scored 5 times, but Viitorul could have found the net themselves, having a couple of decent opportunities.

I believe Viitorul will manage to score this time around, at home, against a Gent side which will be a bit relaxed and will probably not be at full strength. At the same time, the visitors are just too good for Viitorul, have more quality and more experience, so they should bang in at least one goal themselves considering how poor Viitorul defends.

Viitorul’s manager and owner, Gheorghe Hagi, stated that “our objective in this match is to score a goal and we`ll see after that”. There`s no reason to not trust these statements, given the fact that Viitorul has always been an offensive minded team and that Hagi has no one to answer to.

Overall, my tip in this clash is both teams to score. Prediction: FC Viitorul – KAA Gent 1-1.
