Great game today in the Championship between Wigan and Doncaster, two quality teams. This should be an interesting game, and it also has value betting-wise.
Following a solid win against Barnsley (4-0), Wigan were upset by Bournemouth in the second round of the league saturday (1-0), it was a game I expected Wigan to win. They did play more than a half an our with 10 men, but they were already led 1-0 so that is not an excuse for them. Maybe the match against Manchester United (0-2) took a toll on them, as they gave it their all in the community shield and put on a good display. After the loss against Bournemouth, Wigan really has to win this, the Championship is a tough league and zero points (or one) in two consecutive games against poor opposition could really hurt their promotion chances. The hosts have a great team, they lost some players after relegating last year but they still have arguably the best squad in the Championship and are among the favorites for direct promotion.
Doncaster achieved promotion from League One last season and managed to beat Blackburn 2-0 after they were trashed at home by Blackpool in the first round (1-3). Doncaster aims no more than to stay up this season, and they may have the quality to do it, but they are by no means playoff or promotion contenders. The squad is rather weak and they are way below Wigan in terms of quality. Doncaster`s defense does not look reliable so they could have problems trying to snatch a draw today.
Team news: McManaman, Rogne, Caldwell and Ramis are out for Wigan. Owen Coyle has announced that some players who performed poorly against Bournemouth may be left on the bench. Doncaster will have to do without Forrester and Fernandez. Dean Furman is doubtful, but he should play.
The visitors did not play an official away game since april, so it could be hard for them today on one of the toughest grounds in England. Wigan has always been a great home team, so this will give them an important and decisive edge today.
