Ungur – Sijsling

Ungur Sijsling Roland Garros tips

Adrian Ungur and Igor Sijsling will square off in one of the least anticipated first round matches at Roland Garros, but a match with interesting betting potential.

For his standards, Adrian Ungur is having a very good summer on the European clay. He reached the second round in Istanbul, passing qualifications and playing a great match against Dimitrov, almost winning that one. Here in Roland Garros he won 3 qualifying matches with wins over Smyczek, Tiafoe and Fucsovics. Ungur is a player who has a very high ceiling, being able to challenge almost anybody on clay, on his day. However, his day comes once or twice per year at best. His high risk style of painting the lines doesn`t combine well with his mental fragility, making Ungur a below average player. But over these last few weeks, he is having one of those stretches in which he`s playing very well.

Sijsling did not look great in the qualifiers. He almost lost to Skugor in the first round, barely pulling off a 2-1 win with 2 tiebreaks involved. He went on to defeat Zemlja 6-4 6-0, but Zemlja was a shadow of himself, not looking healthy. Finally, Sijsling lost 6-3 6-2 to de Schepper in the final round, but he qualified for the main draw as a lucky loser. Otherwise, Sijsling came to Paris in decent form – reaching the second round at Munich (passed qualies) and the QF at Helibronn challenger after initially losing 3 consecutive matches at challenger level to start the European clay court season.

The Head 2 Head is 1-0 for Sijsling, as he won the only meeting back in 2013, in Davis Cup, on indoor hard. It was a 2-1 win for Sijsling, but this time he will have a tougher task on clay. Ungur is a specialist on the red dirt, while Sijsling is not quite natural on the surface. He`s an all rounder and he can definitely play his game on clay, but he prefers hard courts, particularly indoor. The surface is an advantage for Ungur here.

Ungur has a great chance to reach the Roland Garros second round for the second time in his career. He did it a few years ago, when he took a set from Federer before losing 3-1 and this could be one of his last chances to post a Grand Slam win and win some serious money.

The Romanian is in good form, he`s finally healthy, his high risk shots are going in and he is in one of those rare moments when he`s playing close to his potential. His level of confidence was obvious in his comeback from a set and a break down against Tiafoe in the last qualifying round (4-6 6-2 6-4), something that is rather uncharacteristic for Ungur.

The Romanian is very dangerous when he`s playing like he currently does and I can`t see an out of form Sijsling beating him on clay, a surface that gives Ungur an important edge.

All things considered, my tip here is Adi Ungur to win, I can see him claiming victory in 4 sets. I will keep the stakes at a reasonable level, as my form is very poor and Ungur can still be inconsistent – but I trust him here and the odds (which are dropping) are pretty good on this bet. Prediction: Adrian Ungur – Igor Sijsling 6-4 3-6 7-5 6-4.

  1. Rostick,

What do you think about Halys vs Chung? Feels like a safe bet to me on Halys.. Played very strong against Sousa last week, + home advantage, surface suits him better imo.

Beside all that Chungs form is not very impressive, and playing a tournament in Korea this month seems like a strange move..
Perhaps I am missing something because of the high odds on Halys (1,76) on unibet?

    • I like Halys as well, watched him in a couple of matches over the last few weeks and he seems very solid. You are right about Chung playing in Korea, might affect him and he`s in poor form anyway. I agree with the surface factor as well. Bottom line, Halys seems like a good bet.

However, I would not call it a safe bet against a talented player like Chung, in the first round of a clay court Grand Slam. For me, Ungur seemed ever safer than Halys and he made a fool out of me. I would keep the stakes at a reasonable level. Good luck!

  2. All right thanks for your reply! Safe bets don’t exist indeed, unfortunately ..
Ungur was at his worst and Igor played his best RG match ever, but still the setpoint for Ungur in the3rd set was more like a match point.
Igor being that tired after such short sets confirms that statistically Igors chances on winning were very low.

Let’s hope for a great RG! Tennis and betting wise ✌️

    • Yep, seemed like Ungur can pull off an incredible comeback but he wasn`t able to snatch that third set. He woke up too late. Best of luck with your bets, I`ll likely start tipping Roland Garros tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, I don`t like the duels between clay courters in the first round.
