Verdasco – Haas

Verdasco Haas betting preview

One of the most interesting first round matches of the opening day at the 2015 US Open will see Fernando Verdasco take on German veteran Tommy Haas.

Verdasco is coming after a 0-2 loss to Goffin in the Cincinnati second round, after initially downing Tsonga 2-1 in the first. That was his only win since Wimbledon, in 6 matches played, so it`s fair to say that Fernando is not exactly in top form. His inconsistency continues to hurt him big time, he can`t keep up a solid level for the whole duration of the match and if he doesn`t recover soon, he will be out of the Top 50 by the end of the year.

Haas made a nice comeback this year at age 37, after suffering another shoulder surgery last season. The German ace was pretty sharp in his first few matches and really challenged Raonic in Wimbledon, but since then he has been really poor, apparently playing worse and worse – which is very surprising and not quite logical. Tommy played 4 matches on the US hard courts this summer, only beating Rublev and losing to Young, Ebden and Carreno Busta – not exactly top class opponents.

Tommy Haas leads the Head 2 Head 3-1 (all matches on hard courts), so he knows how to play Verdasco. However, the Head 2 Head is not too relevant considering that Haas is back after injury and all his wins were before 2009 – with Verdasco winning the last match in 2014, a close three setter.

Haas is in poor form, that`s for sure, but it`s very important for him that he managed to play a fair number of matches, stay injury free and get back in rhythm. US Open was surely his main focus, so he might very well look different here, in a Grand Slam – just like he did in that Wimbledon match with Raonic. Verdasco is in poor form as well, he is very inconsistent and volatile and he can`t maintain a good level for an entire match, especially in a Grand Slam 3 out of 5 sets format. Haas can take advantage of Verdasco’s shakyness.

With the above in mind, I find it very likely that Haas will take at least one set here, maybe even push it to five sets. It looks likely that 4 sets will be enough to cover the under / over line, which is currently set at about 36 games – so my tip here is over 36 games to be played. Prediction: Fernando Verdasco – Tommy Haas 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-7 6-1.
