Halmstad – Goteborg

Thomas Rogne Goteborg goalBottom of the table Halmstad takes on Allsvenskan leaders Goteborg in what seems to be a very unbalanced match on paper.

Halmstad was always going to be one of the main candidates for relegation in Allsvenskan and the start of the season proved they really do not belong in the Swedish top flight this season. Halmstad won just 4 points in the first 9 rounds and are on a 4 match losing streak. They are a little bit better than their current horrible stats, but not by much. Ironically, Halmstad’s only win this season came against a strong Elfsborg side, but the hosts know it will be hard to replicate the same performance (and have the same luck) against an even better Goteborg team.

The visitors are leading the league right now and they really seem to be Malmo’s main threat for the title. Goteborg is playing some great, balanced football. They have a very good team, cohesive, with good players playing together for a long time, but also added some superior talent this season in the likes of Rogne from Wigan or Eriksson from Cagliari. Goteborg has won all the previous 4 matches, including a superb 3-0 win over AIK on Thursday. The visitors will feel they have a huge chance to make a stand for the title today, after Malmo lost to Hacken last round and has a reasonably tough game in Kalmar this round.

Team news: Both sides should line up in similar fashion to how they did last round. One of the main reasons for Goteborg’s excellent form has been their good health and they will be happy to be able to field mostly their best lineup again.

This match might be considered a “trap” by superstitions punters, the classic “first place vs. last place”, “4 consecutive wins vs. 4 consecutive losses”. But fact is that Goteborg is such a solid team this season, cohesive, not quite prone to upsets and surely in a different league than Halmstad as far as quality is concerned. The visitors will also be desperate to capitalize on Malmo’s loss on Thursday, this is a game of massive importance and I can’t see Goteborg blowing it against arguably the worst team in the league – and definitely the team that is playing the worst football right now.

The last 6 meetings between the two teams saw 1 draw and 5 Goteborg wins, including a 5-1 drubbing in the most recent H2H match, late in November last year. My tip is Goteborg to win. Prediction: Halmstad – Goteborg 0-2.
