Real Madrid – Man Utd

Real Madrid Manchester United betting preview

Real Madrid and Manchester United will square off in the UEFA Super Cup final, set to be played at the Phillip II Stadium in Skopje, Macedonia.

Real Madrid had a rather quiet pre season in terms of results, but more importantly in terms of transfers. Los Blancos parted ways with the likes of Pepe and Morata, without bringing in any potential starters so far. A downside could be the fact that they seem to be a little bit behind Manchester United as far as preparation for the new season is concerned, having played 4 less friendlies in the Summer.

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United will surely be desperate to get one over Real Madrid, and they will hope new signings Lukaku, Matic and Lindelof can help in that attempt. United should be fully in match shape coming into this match, as the Premier League is set to start next weekend. The Devils also had results in the pre season friendlies, although that isn`t too important.

Team news & lineups:

The big news for Real Madrid is that both Bale and Ronaldo are doubtful. Bale suffered a training injury, while Ronaldo hasn`t featured in any friendlies this Summer, but both are expected to feature. Manchester United will miss Bailly, Rojo, Jones, Lingard, Shaw and Young.

Real Madrid: Navas – Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo – Kroos, Casemiro, Modric – Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo

Manchester United: De Gea – Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Darmian – Herrera, Matic, Pogba – Mkhitaryan – Lukaku

The two teams met just a few weeks ago in USA and it was a 1-1 draw with Manchester United winning via penalties.

Real Madrid is obviously the better team here (and probably the more homogeneous), but they might not have an easy game against Manchester United, with Mourinho set to do everything in his power to take revenge over his old club.

United is expected to field a 3-5-2 lineup on paper, but in all honesty it will be more like a 5-4-1 system – with Valencia and Darmian as wingbacks, and Mkhitaryan sure to drop in midfield. This suggests Mourinho will approach this game in a very defensive manner, as he usually does (with great success) when a trophy is on the table.

With this being a glorified friendly set to be played in massive heat (~ 35 degrees Celsius expected), and with United expected to park the bus, betting against goals could be the right choice here. The fitness problems of Bale and Ronaldo strengthen this opinion, although on the other hand United misses players at the back.

I reckon Real`s offensive strength (they scored for fun last season) will be nullified by the intense heat and by Mourinho’s tactical approach.

All in all my tip here is under 2,5 goals and I believe there`s very good value in the odds. I will not push the stakes above 7 units though. 1-0 or 1-1 would be my call. Prediction: Real Madrid – Manchester United 1-1.
