Romania – Faroe Islands

Romania Faroe Islands football tipsThe Romanians are looking to further assert themselves in Group F, as a win over Faroe will put them in an almost certain position to qualify directly for Euro 2016.

Romania was surprisingly good in this Group, not necessarily due to the level of football (which was good), but especially due to pragmatism and ability to complete the job. Old manager Piturca left last year, but Romania continued in the same way under Anghel Iordanescu, easily defeating Northern Ireland 2-0. The hosts are sitting on the first place with 10 points in 4 games but they also benefited from the futility of other teams – especially Greece, who managed to even lose to Faroe at home and has a single point. With only Hungary and Northern Ireland to worry about, Romania is as good as qualified with a win today.

Faroe Islands got the biggest win in their history against Greece, but obviously that was a fluke, as Faroe lost the other three games against Finland, Northern Ireland and Hungary. The visitors are clearly one of the emerging nations in football and have a very solid defensive setup, never losing by more than 2 goals in this group. They will come to defend, hoping for a 0-0 draw or, more likely, a respectable defeat.

Team news & lineups:

Romania continues to miss captain Marica, but otherwise there are no key injuries or suspensions. Faroe will not have captain Benjaminsen, who is tied with his new job as prison guard and his fellow holding midfielder Hansson is out as well.

Romania: Pantilimon – Papp, Chiricheş, Grigore, Raţ – Pintilii, Sânmărtean – Popa, Rusescu, Maxim – Keşeru

Faroe Islands: Nielsen – Tor Naes, Gregersen, Nattestad, Davidsen – Justinussen, Holst, Olsen, Bartalsstovu – Hansen – Edmundsson

Faroe is a side that mast be treated with respect, but obviously they are nowhere near Romania’s quality and the chances for the visitors to get points in Bucharest are virtually zero. Romania should have enough to put a minimum of 2 goals past them, probably more – the handicap line is lower than I expected. There`s a sense and a feeling around Romania’s players that they need to prove themselves after years of mediocrity and we could see them in this group playing with real enthusiasm, creating chances with ease and going for as many goals as they can. Romania’s home games were total dominance for the hosts, even the 1-1 draw with Hungary, with the players boosted by an energetic audience.

Expect Romania to come out motivated and hungry for goals. Even if Faroe Islands will defend well (which is a very big “if” with their two best holding midfielders unavailable), Romania should still be able to convert the pressure and put at least 2-3 goals past them, though I fully expect the fans to push them for more. My tip is Romania -2 asian handicap and I`ll go with particularly high stakes, as I can not envision a worse scenario than getting our investment back. Prediction: Romania – Faroe Islands 4-0.
