Querrey – Sela

Sam Querrey Dudi Sela betting previewSam Querrey and Dudi Sela will battle it out for a place in the Atlanta quarterfinals after both of them won in straight sets on Monday.

Listen, Querrey had a really bad year by his standards but he regained his old form in Wimbledon, when he played a marvelous match with Tsonga, I watched that one and reckon he should have won it. Big Sam took some time off after the London Grand Slam but came back strong here in Atlanta, dispatching a dangerous Steve Johnson. Johnson did not do too many things wrong, but Querrey was serving unbelievable and putting away massive forehands. Very important, Querrey’s backhand looked extremely stable and helped him to stay in rallies. Overall, Querrey really looks like his old self at the moment and he always produced his best tennis in these US hard court tournaments, so expect him to play another solid match against Sela.

Dudi Sela posted some awful performances in the last 3 years, playing very poor tennis. Once a top 30 player for a brief period of time, the Israelian simply can not limit his unforced errors and it`s doubtful he will ever return between the top 50 players in the world. Sela had another bad year, but on the other hand he did show some improvements in the last 2 tournaments, both played in US, posting a QF at Newport and a 2nd round at Bogota. However, he defeated poor, inconsistent players and lost both times to Karlovic in 2 sets. Here in Atlanta Sela got past another inconsistent player in dreadful form, Young, posting a blow out handicap win (6-2 6-0), but don`t dwell on the result too much: Young was horrible. The Israelian does not look capable of going for the win against better players.

The H2H is 1-1, Sela won the last meeting in 2012 but Querrey leads the H2H 1-0 on hard courts. Not much to say about the matchup, Sela is a speedy player who can produce great angles on his day, Querrey is a big server with a great forehand and good all around game.

Querrey is in form again, he`s playing his best tennis and if he plays like he did in the first round I can’t see Sela having any kind of opportunities. I would not give the american odds of over 1.25 for the simple win. Querrey`s serve is looking amazing right now, so I don`t expect his opponent to get too many break point opportunities. On the other hand, Sela is a streaky, small player with a mediocre serve, so I can easily see Querrey putting pressure on the Israelian’s serve, especially when Sela will start making his usual unforced errors. The American is not only serving bombs, he has the whole package working well right now (movement, forehand, backhand, etc.). Big Sam is the better player, in better form and has the big advantage of his massive serve. With the way he looked on the court in his last 2 matches, expect him to easily outplay Sela here and get a nice, solid victory in 2 sets. Sela could reach a tiebreak, there`s no denying that, but Querrey is an expert there while Dudi lost the last 3 tiebreaks he played.

My tip is Querrey to win 2-0. The handicap might be ruined by a tiebreak, so Querrey 2-0 seems to be the better choice. The odds are influenced by Sela`s big win over Young. Prediction: Sam Querrey – Dudi Sela 7-6 6-3.

Pick: Querrey 2-0
