Wawrinka – Shapovalov

Wawrinka Shapovalov Rotterdam betting preview

Stan Wawrinka and Denis Shapovalov will square off in the quarterfinals at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam, on indoor hard, and this should be a top match between two fine players.

Wawrinka had a rather modest year so far, at least for a player of his standards, but the Swiss really seems to be coming into his own this week in Rotterdam. Wawrinka played some great tennis in his two matches this week against Paire (7-6 6-1) and Raonic (6-4 7-6). He was particularly impressive in the last three sets he played, and his win over Raonic could have (should have) been even more straightforward, as Waw kept putting pressure on the Raonic serve for the entire match – while only facing one break point himself.

Shapovalov is also coming after two great wins in straight sets against Skugor (7-5 6-3) and Berdych (6-4 6-3). The Canadian was absolutely fantastic against Berdych, playing some of the best tennis he is capable of. He demolished Berdych by playing aggressive and consistent, taking the ball early, and did it despite not putting many of his first serves in (46% in the first set, inproved to 55% after the second).

The H2H is 1-0 for Shapovalov , the only meeting taking place a few months ago in Tokyo, in the same conditions as this one (indoor hard). Shapovalov won that in three sets. Both players like the surface, so that shouldn`t make a difference.

Both players have been excellent in the previous round, and betting the over on the total games (or sets) line immediately jumps to mind as a possible option here. However, the bookies set the odds really well. The total games line stands at 23.5 games, making a bet on the over less tempting.

At a closer analysis, there might be better value on Wawrinka in this match.

While Shapovalov played exceptional tennis against Berdych, he did show a bit of weakness in the second set when he was broken from a winning position, although he eventually broke right back. He also benefited from the fact that Berdych didn`t really play that well and wasn`t able to put pressure at all on Shapovalov, giving him exactly the kind of balls he wanted rally after rally – not playing very long and not putting any sharpness in his shots.

Wawrinka on the other hand had a much tougher draw with Paire in the first round and Raonic in the second, and navigated it brilliantly with no blips or dips in form. Stan was ice cold against Raonic and didn`t allow Milos to even get a chance of getting back in the match.

Wawrinka is looking very stable this week, he is playing at a very high level, and in these circumstances you have to give him a sensible edge over Shapovalov here. Waw`s explosive groundstrokes will pose a much more different and tougher challenge to the Canadian than Berdych`s rather lifeless game did.

My tip will be Wawrinka to win this. Odds are dropping at the moment on the Swiss. Prediction: Stan Wawrinka – Denis Shapovalov 7-5 4-6 6-3.
