Wolfsburg – Bayern

Schurrle goal WolfsburgWolfsburg will take on Bayern Munich in the German DFL Supercup, to be held at Volkswagen Arena – thus making Wolfsburg the hosts of the match.

Wolfsburg suffered a dip in form late on last season, but overall they were brilliant, playing some of the best attacking football in Europe, led by the magnificent Kevin De Bruyne – who is higly doubtful today and could be heading for a move, possibly to Bayern. Wolfsburg will be drawing confidence ahead of today`s match from the last time they met Bayern, a 4-1 epic win at VW Arena and from Bayern’s questionable motivation.

Guardiola did not pay too much atention to the DFL Supercup last year, with his side being trashed by Borussia Dortmund for a second consecutive year in this competition and looking completely unprepared. It`s becoming a bit of a habbit for Bayern to start with a defeat in the Supercup. Surely the Bavarians will try to do better this time around, but obviously the Supercup is the lowest of the objectives they have this season. As opposed to Wolfsburg, Bayern did make a big signing in the off season, Arturo Vidal.

Team news & lineups:

Luiz Gustavo and Felipe Luis are out for Wolfsburg, while De Bruyne is a big doubt. He should at least feature off the bench though. Dost is also questionable. Bayern is decimated ahead of this match, having to do without Ribery, Badstuber, Dante, Martinez and Kirchoff, while Robben, Vidal and Benatia are questionable. Robben and Vidall are unlikely to play.

Wolfsburg: Benaglio – Vieirinha, Naldo, Klose, Rodriguez – Guilavogui, Arnold – Caligiuri, Perisic (De Bruyne), Schurrle – Hunt

Bayern Munchen: Neuer – Rafinha (Benatia), Boateng, Alaba – Lahm, Alonso, Alcantara, Bernat – Muller, Lewandovski, Costa (Gotze)

Luiz Gustavo is an important absentee from Wolfsburg’s lineup, Dost could be another and De Bruyne could be an even bigger one, but overall Bayern has much more injury worries and we saw how bad Bayern looked without its key players in that 1-3 Champions League defeat to Porto last season. Missing so many players, playing away and this being a second rate competition may prove to be too big of a task for Bayern to overcome.

Wolfsburg is exceptionally good on home court and I can see them taking advantage of the situation and upset Bayern to add another trophy to the collection. They are surely hungrier than their opponents and that could prove enough at this stage of the season. At the very least Wolfsburg should be competitive at home, so my tip is a +0,5 handicap on the Wolves. Prediction: Wolfsburg – Bayern Munich 2-1.
