This one is for BMC classic specialist Greg Van Avermaet to win this edition of Strade Bianche.
Van Avermaet form is very good and he has more race days in 2016 than most of his opponents. This should be very important early in the season when not everyone is fully prepared for a long and hard race like this one.
Van Avermaet was great both in Oman and Qatar. He finished 3rd Overall in Qatar with no less than 3 top 5's in 5 stages. In Oman he had 2 podiums and a 6th place in 6 stages. It is true that he did not won any stage but I think he will step up here and finally get that 1st.
After this 2 stage races he won the first 1 day race Omloop with an incredible performance against top competitors. He was very strong beating Sagan without any problems in a sprint within the strong riders group. He was clearly the underdog there to beat a fast guy like Sagan but his speed was just amazing.
BMC is a pretty strong team here. They have guys like Oss, Phinney and Bookwalter who are reliable on this kind of roads and will help him a lot.
Van Averamaet was very good here last year. He was second after he managed to get away along the winner Stybar and Valverde.
Van Avermaet results in cobbled classics are really good in recent years.This is not a cobbled classic but the white Italian roads have some similarities with cobbled roads. Last year he was 3rd in both Flanders and Paris Roubaix, in 2014 he was second in Flanders while in 2013 he was 6th in Flanders and 4th in Paris Roubaix. As you can see he is always improving and a big win should come soon.
As you can see Greg was always close to win but he always missed that little extra. I think things will change this year and he will get many wins.
