Ali Carter - Alan McManus

I'm liking the World Snooker Championship so far, interesting matches, some beautiful breaks and so far some units earned.
Another game in the first round sees Ali Carter face Alan McManus. Both experienced players, both struggling for form but for very different reasons.Alan McManus is a snooker veteran and at 44 years of age he can still produce some more than decent plays. Unfortunately, his season so far has just been bad, his game is just not there. McManus was never a spectacular player, he is slow, methodical likes tactical games and will often steer he game towards complicated positions where the colors are blocked and winning from one visit to the table is all but impossible. He has that quality, forcing his opponent to play his type of snooker and that can frustrate players and cause mistakes. McManus does not excel in long distance potting, he can punish mistakes and has great safety play. To his credit, he did go through qualifiers at Sheffield easily, defeating Michael Wasley 10-5, Andrew Pagget 10-4 and Michael Mann 10-6. The win against Wasley is most impressive, especially from the margin, Wasley being a very solid player capable of some pretty great snooker. One more thing to take into account is that McManus enjoys playing this long format and he demonstrated last year when he defeated Mark Williams, John Higgins and Ken Doherty before losing to future champion Mark Selby.
Ali Carter has missed most of this season because of health problems that I won't go into here, if anybody is interested they can read about it anywhere. I thought that coming back to the tour will be very difficult for Carter after being out for almost a year but I was kind of proven wrong. I say kind of, because Carter alternated between some great results like wins over Mark King, Shaun Murphy, Matthew Selt with bad losses to Rod Lawler for example. He is still not the player that made two world championship finals, but I think he is getting there. He is what I call a complete player. He has a decent long pot, is a very good break builder, a little weaker on safety play especially lately. The long format is a question mark regarding his physical fitness, but normally it should not be a problem. The truth is Carter is still kind of a question mark which is why his odds are pretty high to win this. Going by the track record this year for McManus this should be a 10 out of 10, but with Carter in this state I don't want to risk more than 7 units. The odd on Carter to win is about 1.50 for a 2 frame handicap is 1.80 so I like that little extra boost even if it is not a lot. If the game goes to a decider than my analysis was wrong anyway and I deserve to lose. Carter is the more valuable player but I expect things to be pretty tight. We should have long frames with chances for both players and not a lot of breaks over 70 points. If Carter is fit and has the patience to play the safety tactical game when he has to, he should win this. The 1.80 odd doesn't really have value but I do believe it is correct for this bet. My prediction: 10-7 to Carter.
