Bryan B./Bryan M. - Bopanna R./Mergea 🎾

Wimbledon quarter finals men's doubles. This is the game pretty much everybody expected in the the top draw for the quarters but honestly I did not expect this odd.
There is no much to say about the Bryan brothers. They are one of the best doubles in the history of tennis, twin brothers, played together all their lives. Their game is like geometry: the best angles to create the most open space to finish off the points. Their plays can be somewhat predictable but that does not make them any easier to beat. All that being said, the Bryan's and not invincible as this year has proven. They remain the most powerful double out there but they can be beat and Mergea actually proved it this year when he beat them twice, once in the Australian Open.
Mergea and Bopanna are a relatively new couple on the tour but they have already proven they work very well together. They have a title under their belt on clay and they have shown a lot of promise on grass. Bopanna is a very experienced player used to play at a very high level. Mergea was one of the most talented young Romanian players in both singles and doubles but elements that have little to do with tennis prevented him from putting that talent to use. In the last couple of years Mergea improved a lot in doubles and is now one of the best players in the world. His problem lately, in my opinion, is that he changes partners a lot and I would love to see him build a solid partnership. Unlike their opponents, Mergea and Bopanna are more creative players, less consistent but capable of unexpected shots. Their superior technique allows them a wider range of shots and they can put the brothers in serious trouble.
The Bryan brothers have the better serve but Bopanna and Mergea have the better return. The synergy is clearly better for the Bryan's but Mergea and Bopanna have clearly shown that on a good day they can beat anybody. The format does give the Americans a bit of an edge in my opinion as does the fast surface. The Americans are favorites here but 4.00 odds on Bopanna and Mergea is much too high and I think there is a lot of value here. Also if they manage a good start this could be a great opportunity for trading. My opinion is we are going to see at least four sets and Bopanna and Mergea can give the brothers a run for their money.
