Mark Selby - Anthony Mcgill

The second round of the World Championship is getting started today so fewer and more tight matches await us. The first round has so far had two surprise as far as I am concerned Stevens destroyed Mark Williams and Anhony Mcgill defeated Stephen Maguire in a deciding frame.
Mcgill is still a young player on the tour at 24 years old. He has demonstrated a lot of potential and is going to be a real contender for a top 16 spot from next season. I've seen him play a couple of times before the World Championship. He is a good break builder, he can win the frame with one visit to the table. He has good safety play, maybe a problem in strategy and tactics in complicated frames but that comes with experience. His long pot is okay. In the game against Stephen Maguire he actually played well, dominated Maguire from the start, managed to always keep ahead. Truth be told the first session for Maguire was a disaster, he missed some easy pots and gave Mcgill a lot of chances. That does not take away from Mcgill's performance because he managed to make the most of those chances. The second session was a lot more tight and the lack of experience on Mcgill's showed. He led 9-7 but seemed like he just couldn't finish off the game, it got into a decider where Mcgill managed a break of 122 to take the match.
Selby had a very difficult first round match against Kurt Mafflin. A lot of factors came into play in that game: Mafflin played probably some of the best snooker in his career with a pot percentage of over 90 he was amazing. He played aggressively and made Selby work for every frame. Mafflin managed a lot of break of 50 and above. Selby, at least in my opinion, played well but was put against an opponent that did not allow him to dominate. Selby had 92% pot percentage in the first session and about 89% for the second which is not bad in a game that went to a decider. If Mafflin had more experience and a cooler head he would have won that game. But for Selby, being put in that position is a plus. He was confronted with the possibility of defeat in the first round but managed to get out of a very bad situation. That should give him a lot of confidence.
As far as this match goes I have to admit that Selby is a bit overestimated. A 1.25 odd for victory against Mcgill who had a good season by the way is a little low. Even the handicap is not that good but I believe there are elements that justify it. If Selby can start off well and lead after the first session even, no matter the exact score, this pick has good chances. Mcgill played very well against Maguire because he was always ahead, had virtually no pressure until the very end of the game. Selby should come out swinging in this game, or at least I hope. Don't put high odds on this, 6 units is enough for me. My prediction: 13-8 to Selby.
