Rolland Garros first round sees a duel between big server American Sam Querrey and the young and talented Borna Coric.
Querrey is a hard hitter that does surprisingly well on clay courts but it is still not his best surface. His serve is a key part of his game and when it works well with a first servr procentage over 65% he is very very hard to beat. He has a good forehand, a lot of power and he is good at the net. The problem is that, aside from these strenghts, he is somewhat mediocre. He does not move around the court that well, his backhand in prone to errors and even when it goes in, it is rarely a shot that poses problems to opponents. The surface in Paris doesn't do him any favors. It is a little faster than other clay courts but still, it is clay.
Borna Coric is a youngstar on the circuit and if he managed to be a bit more consistent he could actually be competitive at a high level. He is still somewhat of a question mark. What I know is this: he has a decent first serve but doesn't usually have a high first serve percentage. His second serve is pretty weak and can be attacked rather regularly. His forehand is strong and his backhand is good. He is prone to mistakes and by that I mean series of mistakes, a downward spiral that can last for a couple of points or even games. He is very good when it comes to movement around the court which should be a plus.
I see a game where Querrey will try to finish the points fast, in less than five shots. Any more than that and Coric is the favourite to take the point. If Coric has the presence to not take that many risks and to force Querrey just to play more shots this game should be one way traffic. Coric will have problems breaking the Querrey serve, but I've seen him return against Federer where the Swiss had more problems holding serve that breaking Coric, so his return is solid. Querrey will have problems breaking Coric simply becausemhe will have to play the points there and he will be the underdog. For me this ia a combination of value bet and pretty much one way analysis. The only problem I see for Coric is his lack of experience at this level but there is just a difference in form and potential here.
